Exhibition opening 17.5.2013 klo 19:00-21:00.
17.5.-31.5.2013 (Toinen Linja 31, Kallio, Helsinki).
JANKS ARCHIVE: HELSINKI
On 17.5, from 19:00-21:00, you are invited to Janks Archive: Helsinki, at Kallio Kunsthalle, with Brooklyn based artist, and co-founder of the archive, Jerstin Crosby. Video’s recorded in Philadelphia will be exhibited and Crosby will be present to document as many new and old Finnish insult jokes as possible for the archive. The documentation from this event will be added to a web database, and exhibited in upcoming international exhibitions.
An additional event will be held at Arkadia International Bookshop from 16:0018:00 on 17.5, prior to the opening reception in Kallio.
Inspired by the efforts of archivists such as Harry Smith and Alan Lomax, the Janks Archive aims to establish a collection of putdown jokes from as many cultures as possible; blurring the lines between media art, folklore, anthropology, and comedy. The archive is made publicly available at janksarchive.org, and can be searched by subject, or geography.
Janks archive is a collaboration between American artists, Jerstin Crosby, Ben Kinsley, and Jessica Langley. Collectively, they “are driven by a curiosity of what these jokes tell us about the culture where they originate”. Like poems, or riddles, jokes pack abstract meaning into a few carefully crafted words or phrases.
